Not all video conversion companies are the same. There are numerous local and internet companies that offer so-called "high-quality" video conversions. Even chain-stores like Wal-Mart and CVS claim to capture video using industry-leading technology, but what exactly is "industry-leading technology?" Nobody actually knows. However if they are not willing to disclose what type of equipment they use for video conversions then they are likely hiding the fact that they are using cheap low-grade equipment that will produce a low-quality video conversion.
At Icehouse Pictures we have nothing to hide, we use JVC HR-S9000 Series Prosumer Decks for all our video conversions. JVC's high-end 9000 Series Decks are the best in the industry. They feature a video stabilizer, noise reduction, 4 Dual Azimuth Video Heads and TBC with 4MB Frame Memory. In addition to the deck's built in time-base corrector we also use an external Datavideo TBC-1000 which corrects errors caused by mechanical instability present in analog recordings on mechanical media. The TBC eliminates picture jitter, wavy distortions and rolling picture. Time Base Correction is a necessity for acquiring optimal picture quality out of older, worn out videotapes.
A quality video conversion requires quality equipment controlled by experienced highly skilled technicians to preserve the sound and visual quality of your original video. That just isn't something your going to find at a place like Wal-Mart.
